Failing Canadian Democracy

As of at about eleven p.m. on May 2nd we are now under a conservative majority government. I myself am a flesh and blood Liberal, simply enough it is the only logical choice given the global climate but I'm not here to rant about the Liberals. The fact stands that Stephen Harper has no respect for Canadian democracy; the fact that he prorogued government once and attempted to do it again alludes to his controlling nature. If most of Canada opposed his trying to do so, why did they re-elect him? Why do the people choose to support a man who defrauds our proud system? When I point out what Harper has done I get met with the same response: So what. So what Canada? If the people do not stand up for their democracy you will see it slip away from you. I am not blowing smoke when I say the Liberal Party made Canada what it is today. Some of the greatest Prime Ministers in history were Liberals; Trudeau, Pearson, Chretien. Just to name some Liberals who ad majority governments. People were constantly complaining about the quality of life during the past couple of years, and yet they would re-elect the man behind said decline. Stephen Harper has failed our Democracy; Stephen Harper has no respect for you, the Canadian people. So why does this man deserve to be our leader? Why does a man who opposes Abortion and Same-sex Marriage be allowed to be the leader of one of the most progressive and socialist countries in the world. I know the Liberal Party dropped from 77 seats to 35, and I know the NDP climbed to 105, but the Canadian vote tells us something more, that Canadians still want a strong Left-wing government, that Canadians still have the same respect for our left-wing heritage, that Canadians are not content with their democracy being defrauded by the right-wing.

If we look here the results are fairly clear; 52.1% of the Canadian vote lies in the left-wing. Does this seem to imply that the conservatives deserve a majority or even to hold government given their platform is so opposite to the NDP and Liberal parties? If more of Canada opposes the Government than supports it does it truly represent the will of Canadians. This is not what Canadians want or deserve, we need strong leadership to take us further into an already turbulent century. We've seen so many firsts under a Harper Administration, the first Prime Minister in contempt of Parliament, the first Prime Minister who lost our seat on the united Nations Security Council, the First prime Minister to forcibly remove Canadian voters from a rally, The first Prime Minster whose supporters have tried to have hundreds of Canadian votes go voided. Is this the leadership you want Canada? Nobody who calls themselves a supporter of democracy cannot support some of the things our leader has done, and why should we support him at all? I am ashamed to say that our democracy has been failed, and I sit in fear as I wait to see what will come of our beloved country under five years of an unsupported tyrant, and I pray our democracy gets out alive.

Once upon a time Canada was viewed as one of the major Left-wing countries and a safe haven for those looking for new opportunity under a fair democracy. Once upon a time the Liberal Party of Canada was the strongest Left-Wing force in the West. We need new leadership to bring us back to this zenith of social growth. We the Canadian people need to rise up and re-establish our name as one of the biggest name in Left-wing politics and Eco-friendly policy, and we need to rise up and reclaim our position as one of the strongest democracies in the world.
